Ice Swimming 3°C  - Ireland at Lough Rea Wednesday January 8th, 2024

My relationship with cold water changed completely about six weeks ago.

When I was younger, my personal record was standing on a pool ladder for 30 minutes before slowly easing my body into what I would now consider "almost lukewarm water." I’d dip my right foot, then my left, splash a little water over my legs, maybe a drop on my face, and slowly submerge my knees. The sensation of cold water always felt like "a knife cutting through my body" as each part of me made contact with it. Many times, I would turn my back and abandon the idea of swimming altogether.

But today, I have achieved my personal best—and I am so proud! Even eight hours later, I’m still buzzing with excitement. I swam in water below 3°C for nearly three minutes. There were some screams—partly to cope with the cold shock response, partly to express the sheer joy of being alive—and then pure calm. In that moment, the cold doesn't hurt anymore. It was as if I became one with nature. You’ve probably heard that phrase before, but now I can honestly say I understand its true meaning.

This foundation was laid a few years ago when I joined a WhatsApp group of local "dippers." For about three years, I didn’t dip much—maybe just once or twice—but something kept me from leaving the group. Then, on December 1st, 2024, I joined a charity cold-water plunge, and that day something felt different.

Maybe being surrounded by a community of other "mad" people who simply love life helped. Today I've had my 10th cold water swim in 6 weeks, while today, I had my very first ice swim.

From December 1st until now, I’ve listened to numerous podcasts and reports about cold-water swimming, learned about the scientific benefits for both body and mind.

There are, of course, a few precautions to take before dipping into the cold. I plan to share what I have learned in the past weeks, including helpful podcasts, movies and links that I’ve found enjoyable, on my page.

What stood out to me most, though, was the overwhelming sense of joy, positivity, and happiness that radiated from everyone involved. It feels like entering a secret 'club,' with members from all over the world, transcending age, gender, profession, and interests. A diverse group of people, united by what is often described as an "indescribable feeling" as they immerse themselves in the cold water.

Ice swimming (below 5°C) or cold-water swimming (6-20°C) isn’t for everyone, but if you ever decide to take the plunge, rest assured—the Shannon will be waiting for you!
